The Prop House Behind Period Offices

Karl Business Machines is a movie prop house in Trenton, New Jersey, within about an hour of Midtown Manhattan and Philadelphia. We rent vintage office machines to film and television productions, and we carry the largest collection of vintage copiers in the United States. We are a family-owned shop, now in our second generation.

The Challenge of Finding Period Equipment

A modern printer in a scene set decades earlier is the kind of detail audiences catch. Finding the right machine takes work, since many models left offices long ago and the ones that turn up secondhand are often yellowed with age or missing parts. The search gets even harder when a production needs several matching units, such as a row of identical typewriters for a typing pool.

The Machines in Our Rental Collection

Copiers and typewriters are the core of our inventory. Our copiers span decades of Xerox models, along with machines from makers such as Canon and Kodak. IBM Selectric typewriters are one of our specialties, and we rent both fully functional typewriters and prop typewriters. We thoroughly clean every typewriter before it leaves the shop. We can also supply large numbers of identical typewriters and adding machines, matched by model and manufacturer.

Fax machines are another specialty. Our models run from the seventies into the two-thousands and include the larger units once used in government buildings and law offices. Our mimeographs and spirit duplicators come complete with the input and output trays that are so often missing. Teletypes, including Associated Press and United Press International models, suit a newsroom set. Our computer terminals from the late seventies and early eighties have kept their original color and are available in large quantities. We also carry microfiche readers and multi-line office phones.

The Value of Authentic Props on Set

Real equipment holds up in close-ups and gives actors something genuine to handle. A working typewriter lets a performer type for real, and matching units keep a background office consistent from one shot to the next.

Our machines have appeared in films such as A Complete Unknown, Hidden Figures, The Post, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and in series including Severance, Young Sheldon, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and The Deuce. We supplied the working Olivetti typewriters used in the Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown and a copier seen in Severance. We ship nationwide, so productions filming as far away as California can rent from us as easily as crews in New York.

Why Us?

We have serviced and restored typewriters since the shop opened, and we bring that same attention to detail to the machines we prepare for a set. Our showroom displays typewriters we have supplied to film and television productions, all in working order, alongside vintage copiers and other business machines.

We’re open weekdays, with Saturday visits by appointment, and set decorators and film fans are welcome to stop by. Call us for pricing and availability, and let us know what your production needs.
